PROSODIA STILISTICA ET ORATORIA LATINA

PROSODIA STILISTICA ET ORATORIA LATINA. PROF. DR. DARCY CARVALHO. FEA USP. SÃO PAULO. BRAZIL 2020. STUDIES IN MEDIEVAL AND MODERN LATIN

Prosody, Stylistics, and Oratory are sectors in the study of the Latin language that should not worry modern Latinists, who  acquire Latin  just as a mere  instrument of communication and not as an object of Art or adoration. Many hundreds of teachers, though,  along the centuries have tried to make it easier for their students the study of the Roman idiom and they urged the learners to imitate the style of writing of the very greatest Roman authors, in both the prose and the poetry realms. In fact, to compose  poetry in Latin constituted for centuries, before the scientific revolution,  an important part of the European education. There used to be then a sharp distinction in the use of the Latin vocabulary between prose and poetry, a distinction we no longer need to consider.
